Meet the Archivists
A native of Spartanburg, SC, Justin Curry Davis is a member of the archival staff at the Riverside Church.
He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in English and Religion from Wofford College. He obtained a dual Master’s Degree from the University of South Carolina, first in Library Science (2013) and then in Public History (2017). His project in public history examined the intersection of interests between philanthropists and constituent groups in the monument efforts at the South Carolina State House.
Through most of his career, he has served as an academic librarian, including work in public services, reference, and archives. His previous position at Limestone University, begun in August of 2017, was a dual appointment as the Information Literacy Librarian and the University Archivist.
In his free time, Justin enjoys singing in choral ensembles and playing the violin. He is also interested in the outdoors, especially hiking.
Brian Engel is an Archivist at The Riverside Church. He obtained his Master's Degree in Library Science from Pratt University in May of 2018 and his Bachelor's degree in History from St. Francis College in 2012. Brian has been working at Riverside since October 2019, when he was originally hired as part of a CLIR grant project to catalog Riverside's extensive WRVR-FM radio broadcast collection. He has since branched out to work on other archival projects and gives public tours of the church.
I was born in Melbourne, Australia and spent my childhood in London & Wales. Studied history at the University of Melbourne and whilst completing my MA thesis, I started working on special projects for the University Archives. After a 6 month trip overseas which turned into 3 years living and working in the US, Belgium & Germany, I returned once again to Melbourne and undertook post-graduate studies in Archives & Library Science which resulted in a career at the Australian Broadcasting Commission as a film & sound researcher, cataloguer & archivist. Since moving permanently to New York I spent 12 years as the archivist at the Conference on Jewish Material Claims against Germany, followed by a stint as a project archivist for The Church of St Luke in the Fields in the West Village. Presently I’m very pleased to be at Riverside Church working on the Architectural & Engineering Drawings project sorting, cataloguing and preserving this important historical resource.
